Concord 1.5 Update:

What are the system requirements for this update?
Online version: Firefox 4 or above, Safari, Chrome, or Internet Explorer 9
Desktop version: Firefox version 4 or higher. See http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/system-requirements.html for system requirements. For Mac users, Concord 1.5 will only work on 64-bit machines and not on 32-bit machines. This resriction does not apply to Windows machines.
How much does the update cost?
The update is completely free.
Who can get the update?
The update is available at no change to all those who have purchased Concord 1.0 (first released at the end of 2009).
What if I have the OLD Concord? Am I eligible for the free upgrade?
The free upgrade is only available to those who have purchased the 2009 edition of Concord (version 1.0). The free upgrade is not available if you have the old Windows, Mac, or DOS versions of Concord.
How do I get the update?
For instructions on how to download the update, visit the Software Updates section of the Concord are on ChristianScience.com.
Why is it only available as a download?
This is a cost-saving measure. Since we will be doing another update for release in just a few months’ time, we decided to hold back on releasing a CD version until then.
What if someone I know doesn’t have an Internet connection or it is very slow – how can they get the update?
You can download the update and burn a CD for them to use to update. Instructions are online here.
What’s new in the update?
Lots! We have made it easier and faster to search, improved copy/paste functionality, and made the interface less cluttered. For details see our change log for Concord 1.5 in our online community.
How do I get help?
For the quickest response to your need, visit the online community at https://community.christianscience.com/community/concord. Someone may have already posted the answer to the question you have.
Should I wait to upgrade?
There is no reason to wait. You just need a license, which all current users already have. Instructions for downloading are available here.
What took so long to release this 1.5 update?
Several factors, and we so appreciate your patience as we worked through the issues prayerfully and practically. Programming takes lots of time, and we wanted to make this the best tool we could!
Does it work on my iPhone/iPad/Android/other smart phone or tablet?
While it was not specifically designed to work on a smart phone, many of Concord’s features (such as search) will work on a smart phone. For more detailed information, visit the online community, particularly the document called Concord on the iPad.
I understand that most cell data plans are 2-3 gb/month, no longer unlimited (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon). With JSH going online, will having Concord access on my phone make me go over my data plan?
This is very unlikely, particularly if you refrain from playing hymns on your phone. Aside from playing hymns, all Internet traffic in Concord is text only and uses very little data. You would have to use Concord pretty much 24/7 to even have a chance of approaching your data limit.
How is Concord linked with the Journal/Sentinel/Herald online product? If we subscribe to one, do we get the other?
They are completely separate products that must be purchased separately.
Are you finished with Concord, or will there be more releases?
There will be another update (version 2.0) coming in a few months’ time. It, too, will be completely free to existing owners of Concord. We will also be introducing Concord as an online subscription product toward the end of May 2012. Beyond these releases, we will continue to improve Concord on an ongoing basis.
What’s this I hear about a free trial?
A free trial to Concord online will be made available to all in late December 2011. This online trial will last until it becomes a subscription product in late May 2012.

About purchasing Concord:

Where can I purchase Concord?
You can purchase Concord in your local Christian Science Reading Room, or you can purchase it from our online shop.

How much does Concord cost?
Concord costs $325, this includes User License Codes for two users in each package.

If I already own a copy of a previous version of Concord, is there an upgrade price?
No. This is a completely new version of Concord and is not an upgrade.

How many users can use Concord?
Each Concord package comes with two User License Cards for two single users within the same household, church, or organization. Where the license is granted to a church or organization, the primary and secondary users are equivalent to two seat licenses, each assigned to a specific employee by title, or a single computer providing public access in a public place (such as in a Christian Science Reading Room). Neither seat may be assigned to a household.

What this means is that if you purchase Concord for personal use (ie. not as an employee of a church or organization) then you are the primary user. According to the User License Agreement, the secondary user must be a member of your household.

If your church or organization (CSO, Christian Science nursing facility, etc.) purchases Concord for their employees’ use, then of course they don’t have to live in the same household. But then the expectation would be that they are using Concord in accordance to their role within the organization. We expect that a church may buy Concord for their Readers, but when a Reader’s term is finished, the license (owned by the church, not the individual) would pass to the new Reader and the previous Reader would uninstall Concord from their personal computer.

What is different about this edition of Concord than the previous Windows® edition of Concord?
In terms of how it works—everything. Including the fact that Concord will now work on either a Windows® or a Mac operating system.

In terms of what it does, there are three major additions: the Annotate tool and its highlighting feature, the Christian Science Hymnal Supplement: Hymns 430–462 text and sample audio, and the ability to call-up Scriptural verses that are quoted in Eddy’s writings.

The Search function has also been expanded to include: “Related Words” searches for God, Jesus, and Mary Baker Eddy when searching in Eddy’s writings; and searching for a single word will also retrieve results that include conjugations of verbs, single and plural variations, and possessive versions of nouns. For a more thorough explanation of Concord’s core features, please read the Features page.

If an older edition of Concord still works for me, why should I buy this new edition?
If you have an older edition of Concord that still works for you, there are a couple of reasons why you may still want to purchase this new release.

For starters, this edition works on all the newest Windows® and Mac operating systems without having to create workarounds or patches. Secondly, there are a number of new features available now that were not available before (such as the Annotations feature, the Hymnal Supplement, and the Scriptural verse call-up feature). This edition also has an online component that you can access from any computer connected to the Internet. Finally, you may find it’s time for you to switch to the newest edition because previous versions are no longer officially supported.

On the other hand, it may make sense for you to hold off purchasing this newest edition Concord if you have a computer that does not meet the minimum system requirements.

Is there any way to get a single license?
No, the package comes with two licenses.

If not, are you discouraging the aftermarket (eBay or CSDirectory, etc.) sales or trades of unused single licenses (because the package comes with two and there may not be another Christian Scientist in the family)? If so, how do you envision the use of the extra single? Two church members going in together?
According to the User License Agreement within the package (which you will need to read before breaking the seal on the envelope containing the licenses), the two licenses are for two users within a single household (or organization if purchased by a Reading Room for Reading Room use, a church for the First Reader and clerk, or a CSO for the two readers, etc). Selling the extra license or giving it away to someone outside your household will break the terms and conditions User License Agreement. We envision that our customers will want to abide by the terms and conditions they agree to by using Concord and not reselling or distributing extra licenses outside of the allowed uses.

Will there be any student discounts?
No, only the one package option is available.

About system requirements:

What are the minimum system requirements for the desktop edition of Concord?
You can find the full list in the right-hand column of the Product page.

Does this Concord work on a Mac?
Yes, as long as you have the minimum system requirements including: a DVD-ROM drive and Mac OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard.

Does this Concord work on Mac’s Lion OS?

Does this Concord work on Windows® 7?
Yes, as long as you have the minimum system requirements including a DVD-ROM drive.

Does this Concord work on my iPhone?
There is not currently a version designed specifically to work on iPhones. However, you can still try to log into and use the online edition of Concord using the Safari browser included on every iPhone. It will not be as easy to use because of the small screen size, but it may be a substitute for now. You can talk with other Concord users in the online Concord Community about errors and workarounds. If you’re interested in helping to build an app specifically for iPhone, please read about how to help with the on-going development of Concord.

Does this Concord work on my iPad?
There is not currently a version designed specifically to work on the iPad. However, you can still try to log into and use the online edition of Concord using the Safari browser included on every iPad. This should work for you just the same as accessing the online version does on your Mac or PC. You can talk with other Concord users in the online Concord Community about issues you encounter. There you will find a document called Concord on the iPad. If you have more to add, please update the document or comment on your own experience! And if you’re interested in helping to build an app specifically for iPad, please read about how to help with the on-going development of Concord.

Does this Concord work on my BlackBerry®?
There is not currently a version designed specifically to work on BlackBerry® smartphones. However, you will still technically be able to log into and use the online edition of Concord using the Internet browser included on your BlackBerry®. It will not be as easy to use because of the small screen size, but it is a substitute for now. If you’re interested in helping to build an app specifically for BlackBerry®, please read about how to help with the on-going development of Concord.

Does this Concord work on Kindle?
No. Kindle cannot do the complex interactions that are a part of Concord.

Is Concord compatible with the JAWS® screen reading software?
At this point, Concord has not yet been programmed to work specifically with the JAWS® screen reading software. However, we have heard that Concord already works fairly well with JAWS®, but the downside is that the marginal headings in Eddy’s writings are read as part of the main body of text. We do have plans to integrate the ability to work with JAWS® in the near future, and will keep you updated.

Do I need the Internet to make Concord work?
For the Desktop Edition, no, you do not need an Internet connection to use Concord. It works independently off of your computer’s hard drive. However, if you’d like to use the free trial online subscription, then yes, you will need an Internet connection to access your online account.

In addition, if you have an Internet connection, then you will also be able to access our online Concord Community to talk with, ask questions, and receive answers from other Concord users. Having an Internet connection will also make it easier for you to download updates and patches in the future.

About installing and registering Concord:

Will Concord work on my computer?
For detailed information about how to tell whether or not Concord will work on your computer, please download and read the “Will Concord work on my computer?” PDF.

Why is there a sealed envelope in my Concord package?
This sealed envelope contains two User License Cards, each with a Desktop License Code for the desktop edition and a corresponding Online Access Code. You need the Desktop License Code to activate your desktop edition of Concord on your personal computer. The corresponding Online Access Code will enable you to sign up for your free trial subscription of the online edition of Concord. Be sure to copy down these codes with your name on page 2 of your Quick Start Guide (download a PDF). You’ll need these codes in order to receive technical support.

Why do I have two cards in my package?
These two User License Cards each contain a Desktop License Code for the desktop edition and a corresponding Online Access Code.

How will I get updates for my desktop edition of Concord?
If you register your Concord, then we’ll be able to notify you when we release a new software update. Otherwise, you can check our software updates page for complete information.

Are Desktop License Codes per user or per computer?
They are per user, not computer. The Desktop License Codes are tied to their Online Access Code. As a single user, you can install and use Concord on your multiple computers without breaking the User License Agreement. You will only be able to activate a single Online account with a single Online Access Code, but you will be able to access this Online account from any computer with an Internet connection.

What if I lose my Desktop License Code?
Hopefully, you’ve written it down on page 2 of your Quick Start Guide (download a PDF). Otherwise, you can also find it within the Desktop Edition at the bottom of the Welcome splash screen. You can always return to this screen at anytime by clicking “Concord: A Christian Science Study Resource” in the top left corner of the program.

Do I have to register online and by sending in the paper card?
No. Please only register online. There is no need for you to mail in the User License Card.

Why do I need to provide an email address when I register?
Providing an email address will ensure that you will be notified of patches and updates for Concord.

What will happen to the Windows® edition of Concord installed on my computer when this desktop edition of Concord is installed?
Nothing will happen to the Windows® edition that is already on your computer. This is an entirely brand new product, and so it will not update or over-write anything that you already have. It will install the newest edition of Concord as a stand-alone application — much like if you were installing any other software on your computer.

Will I be able to use the Windows® (or Mac or DOS) edition alongside the new Desktop Edition of Concord, or will the installation of the new Desktop Edition of Concord wipe out the older edition of Concord either intentionally or as a by-product of the installation process?
If your older versions of Concord will also work on the same computer you plan to use for this edition of Concord, then you will definitely be able to use the old alongside the new if you choose! Installing the new Desktop Edition of Concord will leave any other editions on your computer untouched. If you wanted to have more than one screen open at a time, this would be a good workaround.

Will the package work with either Windows® or Mac? If I have a Windows® machine now and later get a Mac will I be able to install it on the Mac?
Yes, the package will work on either. You will be able to install Concord using the same DVD-ROM on either a Windows® or a Mac machine.

On how many computers can I install the Desktop Edition of Concord?
You can load the desktop edition of Concord on as many computers as you want, but you can only have two users.

As operating systems and Internet browsers continue to be updated, will Concord continue to be compatible with the latest systems?
That is our intention — to continually keep Concord up-to-date with the latest computer software. We have a community of developers (find out more, including how you can help) that will continue to work on Concord.

About Concord Online:

How do I create an account with the online edition of Concord?
1. Make sure the computer you’re planning on using to access your online subscription has either Internet Explorer® 9, Safari 4.0, Chrome, or Firefox® 4.0 (or later). Each of these browsers is available online to download for free.

2. Go to: http://www.concordworks.com/trial.

3. Read and agree to the Terms of Services and follow the instructions there to sign up for your account.

What are the minimum system requirements for the online edition of Concord?
You will need an Internet connection, and one of these Internet browsers: Internet Explorer® 9, Safari 4.0, Chrome, or Firefox® 4.0 (or later).

Are there any browsers with which Concord doesn’t work?
Concord has only been tested on Internet Explorer® 9, Safari 4.0, Chrome, and Firefox® 4.0. While it may still work on other browsers, it is not guaranteed, you can talk about it with other users in the online Concord Community.

Is the online subscription really free?
Yes, the online subscription is a free trial through May 15, 2012. After that date, the subscription will cost $5.99 per month.

What’s the difference between the online and desktop editions of Concord?
The desktop edition of Concord is loaded onto your computer, and runs directly off of your hard drive. Your desktop Notebooks and Annotations are stored directly on your computer and are accessible from your computer at any time — with or without an Internet connection. On the other hand, with the online edition of Concord, you can access your online Notebooks and Annotations on the Internet from any computer. This means that you can access Concord at home, from work, and on vacation.

What if I want to buy only the online subscription?
You can! Right now, the online subscription is available as a free trial. After May 15, 2012, anyone will be able to subscribe for only $5.99 per month.

What’s the difference between the Notebooks I have on my computer at home and the ones I keep online?
The only difference is where they are stored and how they are accessible. The Notebooks you have online are stored on a secure, remote server and are accessible from any computer in the world with an Internet connection. The Notebooks you have stored in your desktop edition of Concord are stored on your computer’s hard drive and are always accessible from your hard drive, whether or not you’re connected to the internet.

If you’d like to transfer your files between your Desktop and Online accounts, you should export the Notebooks from one and open them in the other. We have detailed instructions on how to do these two things and more in the online Concord Community.>.

Where are my Notebooks in the Online Edition stored? Are they stored in Boston at the Church?
Your content is not stored in Boston on the Church’s servers. We use an independent company to store and back up the Concord program and your encrypted Notebooks. This company has data centers located around the world with the highest levels of security.

How will I get updates for my Online Edition of Concord?
They will be automatic, and you won’t have to do a thing. This is the beauty of the online edition of Concord. As soon as the developers make an update to Concord, it will be live on the website without you needing to do anything.

If I don’t have an Internet connection, will I still be able to use Concord?
You will still be able to use the desktop edition of Concord, but you will not have access to the online edition of Concord or the online Concord Community.

Can more than one person share the same account?
While this is technically possible, it is a violation of the license. Each account is for one person only.

What about for a Reading Room? Can a Reading Room share its online account with its patrons?
Yes, a Reading Room may subscribe to Concord Online with the purpose of allowing its patrons to use it while in the Reading Room. The login information should only be entered by the Reading Room staff and not shared with patrons. Reading Room staff should make patrons aware that any notebooks created in such a situation will be visible to any other patron who later uses Concord in that Reading Room.

About Concord’s content:

What content is included in Concord?
Concord includes the entire text of:

  • the King James Version of the Bible
  • Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy
  • Eddy’s other writings (the Manual of The Mother Church, Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, Retrospection and Introspection, Unity of Good, Pulpit and Press, Rudimental Divine Science, No and Yes, Christian Science versus Pantheism, Messages for The Mother Church 1900, 1901, and 1902, Christian Healing, and The People’s Idea of God)
  • the Christian Science Hymnal
  • and the Christian Science Hymnal Supplement: Hymns 430–462
Are there lists of marginal headings and Scriptural quotations?
Yes, the marginal headings are listed in book order and alphabetical order, and the Scriptural quotations are also listed. You can find these lists under the Table of Contents for Science and Health.

Is the Bible Lesson available to read through Concord?
No, although we are exploring this possibility for future releases.

Will my eBibleLesson subscription work with Concord?
You will be able to paste in a list of citations into the Compile tab. The list of citations from the Lesson can be found at the end of the eBibleLesson PDF. To do that, you can add it as text and then click “Move text to citation cards.”

Why should I buy Concord since I can already search the Bible and Science and Health on www.spirituality.com?
Concord is much more than a simple word search of the Bible and Science and Health. For one thing, it includes all of Eddy’s other writings, the entire Christian Science Hymnal, and the Christian Science Hymnal Supplement: Hymns 430–462. Beyond that, it also gives you the ability to save your notes. You can arrange these either in page order or by theme. Concord is a powerful tool to explore and study Christian Science through the Bible and Eddy’s writings.

When are all of the periodicals going to be included in Concord?
There are no current plans to include the periodicals in Concord. However, you can still read new and old editions of the Sentinel, Journal, and Herald in your local Christian Science Reading Room.

When are other translations of the Bible going to be included in Concord?
Not in the first release of Concord and we cannot guarantee that we will in the future.

When are dictionaries and thesauruses going to be included in Concord?
Not in the first release of Concord, but we’re looking at whether or not to incorporate them in future versions.

About the Hymn Player:

Is there a Hymn Player?
Yes, there is a Hymn Player, which plays sample verses of each hymn.

Does the Hymn Player have the ability to adjust the tempo?
No, the Hymn Player has a standard tempo that is not adjustable.

Does the Hymn Player feature different types of instrumentation or have four-note harmony?
The hymns are played on an electronic keyboard by a single musician.

Search:

Are there still conceptual searches?
Yes, but not in the same way as the Windows® edition of Concord. They’re now called “Related Words” searches, and this capability is only available when searching in Eddy’s writings for God, Jesus, and Mary Baker Eddy.

Which words can be searched for in a “Related Words” search?
“Related Words” is only available when searching for God, Jesus, and Mary Baker Eddy.

Why can’t I do a “Related Words” search for “Christ”?
There isn’t total agreement about which words definitely apply or don’t apply to Christ, and so instead of trying to interpret Eddy’s words, we’re leaving those discoveries up for individual users and their prayerful study.

Is there an option to search with case sensitivity turned on?
The case sensitivity is on by default and programmed into Concord, and only applies to God and its seven synonyms (ie. God, Life, Truth, Love, Mind, Soul, Spirit, Principle).

When searching for one of those eight words, Concord will return results only in the same case as what you have typed in. This means that a search for “love” will return results only for “love” but not for “Love.” For any other word, Concord will return both upper- and lower-cased results. Searching for “Science” will return results for both “science” and “Science.”

If you’d like to look for both the upper- and lower-cased versions of God or the seven synonyms, you can do this in one of two ways. You can either type in both words and then select the “Any Word” option below the Search box. Or, you can type in both words separated by “OR” in all caps.

Can I open multiple Search tabs?
No, there is only one Search tab.

Can I save my favorite searches?
No, not in the Search area. However, you can save a set of search results by selecting all search results (click “Select All”) and then pressing “Transfer” to move all the results to the Compile tab. From there, you can save them as a Compilation.

Is there a saved history of my searches?
No. However, you can choose to “Select All” of your search results from a particular book and then “Transfer” them into a Compilation, thus saving whichever results you want from that particular search.

Does the Search function act like the hardcopy Concordance and separate the various parts of speech, such as verbs, adverbs, nouns, etc.?
No. They aren’t separated here as they are in the hardcopy Concordance. However, by selecting or unselecting “Exact Word,” you can search for single words and receive results that include conjugations of verbs, single and plural variations, and possessive versions of nouns.

Can I choose which books to search ahead of time?
No. Concord searches every book, but you can choose the book from which you want to see results.

Can I look for a particular passage using just the citation?
Yes. Type the citation in the Search field and click the magnifying glass in the Search box, or press Enter on your keyboard. The citation will appear, bracketed, in the Book Content column.

Can I look for words and phrases only within text written by Eddy?
Yes, you can do this by selected “By MBE” below the Search box and then performing your search. This will automatically omit any results from the Bible and any poems, testimonies, or articles that were not written by Eddy.

How do I scroll from citation to citation?
You can either use your mouse to select each one, or you can use keyboard shortcuts. You can press the “+” and “-” keys on your keyboard to move between citations, and then press the “Return” key to bring the citation up in the Book Content column.

Can I search hymns by the entire hymn instead of just by verse? (I want to search for two words that appear in the same hymn, but not necessarily in the same verse.)
At the moment, no, that ability is not available. Concord only searches by verse for the hymns. We have added this request to our list of feature requests for consideration in the future.

Meanwhile, you could try search for either word, and manually going through each result to see which hymns come up for both words.

Notebooks:

Will the information in my Compilations be secure and confidential?
Yes, all of your desktop and online Notebooks are encrypted within a 128-bit encrypted database. No one but you will be able to access and/or read any of your content.

Will I be able to sync the Annotations and Compilations that are on my personal computer with the ones I have stored on my online subscription?
At the moment, no. However, if there’s enough demand for the online edition of Concord, we would try to offer that ability in the future.

Can I save my Notebooks to an external type of document?
Yes, you can do this by clicking on the “Export” icon in the toolbar. It looks like a piece of paper with an arrow.

Can I share my Notebooks with other users?
Yes, you can do this by exporting your Notebooks, and then giving the file to another user. That user can then open the Notebook from within the Notebook tab.

Can I import my old citation documents that were created in previous editions of Concord into this edition of Concord?
Yes, you can do this by opening them within the Compile tab.

Can I import my new citation documents into previous editions of Concord?
No, the citation documents are not backwards-compatible. This is standard practice in software development.

How do I prepare my readings for the Wednesday night testimony meeting?
You can prepare your readings in much the same way as you did in previous editions of Concord. Everyone has their own method of preparing readings, including prayer and searching the Bible, Science and Health, and the Hymnal. You’ll find the best way for you to create your readings, but you will most likely use the Notebook tab to aggregate and organize your selections.

Extras:

Is the newest Christian Science Hymnal Supplement: Hymns 430–462 included?
Yes, you will find it in the Hymnal’s Table of Contents.
Why does the Hymn Player still play old midi files instead of mp3s of piano music?
This mostly has to do with the rights we needed to secure in order to include the music in Concord. The costs for the rights to play mp3s would have been prohibitive. The midis are certainly high enough quality to enable Readers to select hymns for Sunday and Wednesday church services. To hear high-quality, full-length versions of the hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal and the Christian Science Hymnal Supplement: Hymns 430–462, you can purchase the Christian Science Hymnal Accompaniment Hymns 1–429 and the Christian Science Hymnal Supplement Accompaniment Hymns 430–462 from the online shop or in your local Christian Science Reading Room.

Why does the Hymn Player only play one verse of music?
This mostly has to do with the rights we needed to secure in order to include the music in Concord. The costs for the rights to play full songs would have been prohibitive. A single verse of music is certainly sufficient enough to enable Readers to select hymns for Sunday and Wednesday church services.
