Betty O'Neal, CS
A member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship
Betty was a teenager attending a Baptist Sunday School and church with her family when she was given some Christian Science periodicals. While reading these periodicals she became intrigued by the way God was defined as Love. This reading brought new-found peace and joy. She accepted it without question as God’s message to her. She was one of twelve siblings raised by her parents in rural Oklahoma farm. Her father’s grandparents were settlers in the Oklahoma land run.
After graduating from high school, she married a musician and continued to read Christian Science periodicals found on her husband’s grandmother’s living room table and from a laundromat while attending business college. By holding to the scientific fact that “God is Love” and His love knows no barriers and had no favorite children, she overcame obstructions that attempted to prevent her from obtaining professional work in her field. At the office she met students of Christian Science who introduced her to Christian Science church services.
Then as a divorcee, and with a young child to support, Betty continued taking college courses while working full time, until she received a Master’s of Education degree from Cambridge College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She was employed at The Christian Science Church Center in Boston for over twenty years. Her work as a Human Resources Generalist in the Human Resources Department included recruiting employees, resolving employee relationships, and counseling careers. She also served as an on-air host for a Boston-based television program.
Shortly after taking Christian Science class instruction, her love and compassion for others led her into the public practice of Christian Science. She has been an authorized practitioner listed in The Christian Science Journal for over 30 years.
Betty has spoken in a variety of venues including churches, art and community centers, parks, prisons, senior citizen residences, spotlight stage, convention centers, panel discussions, and Theological Seminary. She has also given talks at Interfaith and Community Prayer meetings. Her volunteer work includes her serving as mentor and coach for unemployed and under-privileged women. She rejoices in helping others find peace and fulfillment in their lives through prayer, based on the scientific laws of God. To balance her human experience, she enjoys music, theater and nature walks along the beach with her family and friends near Red Rock, where Mrs. Eddy frequently walked, in Lynn, Massachusetts.
Her testimony appears in the book “Healing spiritually” published by The Christian Science Publishing Society. She has recorded interviews for “The Truth that Heals” and on Sentinel Radio. She also has published metaphysical articles in The Christian Science Monitor.”
