Brian D. Talcott, CSB
A member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship
Brian became actively involved in the practice of Christian Science while attending the University of California, Berkeley. While earning a Bachelor of Architecture from UC Berkeley, he learned he could turn to God with every need. His love of Christian Science led to a new career path: to help others understand and trust God with life’s challenges. He received a Master of Theology in biblical studies from Boston University in preparation for service as a Protestant Chaplain in the US Air Force. Christian Science was a firm foundation for his healing ministry to those of all faiths in the Air Force. He was also able to bring a spiritual perspective to addressing marital challenges, substance abuse, child abuse and domestic violence.
In 1982, Brian, with his wife Nancy and their two daughters, left the Air Force and returned to Berkeley, where he devoted himself to the public practice of Christian Science; he became a teacher of this Science in 1988.
For many years Brian served as the Christian Science Committee on Publication for Northern California—representing the Christian Science Church with the media, the state legislature, and public agencies. During that time he worked to help clergy and other professionals understand and utilize spiritual resources in treating child abuse and domestic violence.
Brian has explained the practice of Christian Science to various audiences, including those critical of this Science. He has addressed a wide variety of professional, religious, interfaith and medical groups, including medical ethics boards, hospice nurses, medical students, and practitioners of alternative therapies. He welcomes the opportunity to discuss with any public audience how the practice of Christian Science can consistently bring healing and regeneration.

- Responding to God’s sustaining love
In these troubled economic times, good jobs may seem hard to find. The opportunities for fulfilling careers seem to be changing, limited, or disappearing. Where can we turn for guidance, for help? How do we deal with the fear of being left out or left behind? Our success in life has a lot to do with the choices we make—throughout our lives.
This lecture will look closely at what is involved with making good career and other life choices. It will describe how to seek God’s direction to find and establish our place in this world. It will challenge the common assumptions and economic factors that seem to govern our success and purpose in life. For those grappling with fear, or despair, it will illustrate how to gain the confidence to lean on God’s sustaining love—and find fulfillment.

- How relying on God brings healing
Millions of people believe in the power of prayer to heal illness. Yet only a small portion has the confidence to rely on God alone, with consistent healing results. So much of what individuals have come to believe about health stands in the way. Christian Science can be practiced by anyone to attain the confidence to turn to God effectively.
This lecture explores the mental nature of both the cause and cure of illness. It explains how Mary Baker Eddy found and followed Christ Jesus’ approach to healing. It addresses the resistance to trusting God with our health and well-being. A central focus of this lecture is how to gain the understanding that we intimately coexist with God, who is Love. The humility it takes to think life through again from a God-centered perspective that results in healing will be discussed.
